Where are you originally from?
In one word or sentence, how do you describe your people?
We could be friendly and obnoxious at the same time.
On a scale of 1-10, how well does your country speak English?
Can you give a key phrase/word/expression that people in your country usually say?
“Anjir”. That could apply to express anything, from surprise to even anger.
How do I say “hello/thank you/please/sorry” in your language?
Thank you: Terima kasih
Are you more like laid back or party people?
Best food? Weirdest food? Local food to try?
This actually depends on personal perspective, but as for best food, I think Nasi Padang is still on the top of the list. The weirdest food, I’m not too sure since we’ve got various kind of food to begin with. But I think if there’s anything that I wouldn’t dare to try is saksang, a savory dish made from minced pork or dog meat. I just hate the idea of possibility to eat dog so it’s a no for me.
Best drink? Local drink to try?
Teh botol sosro. Honestly, it is the kind of drink that I always miss whenever I’m away from home. At first, they only came in glass bottle packaging. Nowadays, they also come with packaging in box and plastic bottle. I’d totally recommend the original packaging because for some reason the taste is totally different and the original one is still the best.
How is breakfast served in your country?
We eat nasi goreng – fried rice – for breakfast. If not, then mie goreng -fried noodle, most often our national pride Indomie- for the rescue.
The best festival to attend?
Java Jazz Festival for those who are into concert and all that. Also Pekan Raya Jakarta (PRJ) or Jakarta Fair for those who are more into culture. Both are held annually.
Which sport are you guys crazy about?
Badminton, because that’s probably the best sport that represents our country. And also football!
What is the craziest thing to do in your country?
Since nowadays Labuan Bajo has gained their popularity, probably getting a tour to see a komodo dragon is one of them.
What excursions and/or activities do you extremely suggest that visitors MUST do?
We are rich with culture and geographically, we’re a big country with a lot of customs in each place. Coming from the western part of Java, I would suggest visiting Saung Angklung Udjo to learn more about angklung and Sundanese culture in general.
Are there any local customs a visitor should be sensitive to?
Yes. Most people in Indonesia are quite sensitive if not butthurt when it comes to religion, so it’s never okay to make any joke related to it.
What is/are the most surreal places/landmarks to visit?
Museum Kesehatan Jiwa, or Mental Health Museum, located in Malang. It’s nothing fancy about the place that is located in the second oldest mental asylum in Indonesia, RSJ Lawang. But my visit to this place has become surreal knowing the fact that the tour guide used to be a patient in the asylum for 19 years.
Can you name a place that most people have not heard of? A secret spot perhaps!
Pantai Rambak, Bangka
Where can visitors find the best beach?
We’ve got so many options when it comes to beach. Bali itself is often mistaken as a country rather than just an island in Indonesia. But I personally love Bangka and Belitung.
If I’m staying for less than a week, which city should I choose?
Bangka and Belitung can be done for like 4 days in total. Otherwise, it’s also recommended to fly out to Surabaya and make a visit to Mount Bromo. The last option, then the infamous Bali that is.
In one word or sentence, how do you describe your country?
Beautiful in its complexity.
How many days at least should a visitor spend in your country?
For the whole country, you could spend a year here and still wouldn’t be able to visit the whole places. It really depends on your preference. But I suppose to get a bit of experience from some major places around here from the west to the east, give it a month to explore?
When is the best time to visit?
Some time from April to September.
Can you give an interesting trivia about your country?
Did you know that Audrey Hepburn’s parents actually tied the knot in Batavia, a city that is currently known as Jakarta, because her dad used to be the British consul in Semarang.
What is your country’s most popular stereotype/cliché?
A country with the biggest Muslim population.
Are you a traveler? Which place is your favorite so far?
Yes, I occasionally travel. My favorite place so far is Vietnam. In Indonesia, like I mentioned before, I love Bangka Belitung Islands.
What’s your best travel story?
The best as I got passed through it, but the worst when it happened. I once ran out of money when I was traveling to Marmaris in Turkey. I stayed in Izmir at that time and my money was only enough to buy the bus ticket back to Izmir. I was with another friend of mine who’s also Indonesian. We literally only bought the bus ticket wishing not to want to pee because we couldn’t afford to get to the public rest room that would cost 1TL. Suddenly, there was this random guy who came to us with this woman who turned out to be Indonesian as well! He heard us talking in our language as it sounds so familiar for him, so he brought this Indonesian who worked for him at the time. He was also going to Izmir at the same bus and we ended up getting spoiled rotten. 😛
Why do you love traveling?
I love traveling, because it gives me a chance to learn the similarity with the people despite the differences that others like to point out.
Website/Blog: http://www.thebeautraveler.com – I blog mainly about travel, but occasionally write about beauty and dating tips.
